The weekend somehow inspires me to go to the movies, my ritual, popcorn and all, and this weekend I thought I would go and see this film before it comes off the big screen.
The Accountant is an entertaining action thriller starring Ben Affleck as an autistic whiz at maths also good at killing people, Rain Man meets Jason Bourne being the premise.
Affleck’s character is on the high-functioning end of the autistic spectrum with a niche occupation to suit his skills and limitations. A forensic accountant with a rather specialised clientele, he works for drug cartels, arms dealers, money launderers and the Mob, you know, as you do. If anyone has been cooking their books, he’s the man who will find out.
He is a lethal fighter, having been put through a punishing regime of combat training by his military during his childhood.
These abilities come into play after he takes what seems on the surface a legitimate job that turns out to have a crooked side. Called in to sort out a multi-million dollar discrepancy in the accounts of a robotics company, he finds himself up against a ruthless mercenary and his hired guns. On top of this, suspcious treasury agents are trying to uncover his identity. Plus he feels duty bound to protect the whistle-blowing accounting clerk who has ended up in the firing line.
As you can see nothing too complicated ;-)
Of course none of this exactly stands up to scrutiny, nevertheless it doesn’t detract from making the movie quite pleasurable to watch.
Do look out for the moments when Affleck’s hero blows on his fingertips, the fussy obsessive-compulsive ritual he performs before he gets down to a task, any task, whatever it may be .
All considering I really enjoyed it.
If it has stopped showing at your local cinema, buy the DVD when it comes out; a glass of wine, some popcorn, it is the perfect winter evening indoors.
