OBESITY IS A CAUSE OF CANCER TOO

Mental & Physical Well-Being is the basis for optimum performance & balanced life. So how can we tackle the rising obesity epidemic: is it an emotional battle or addiction? Is it a chicken v egg situation?“, I wrote in my blog last Wednesday.

I know that the Cancer Research campaign launched this month reviving last year’s activity is facing some new backlash for ‘fat-shaming‘.

Cancer Research UK says, “bowel, kidney, ovarian and liver cancers are more likely to have been caused by being overweight than by smoking tobacco. It says millions are at risk of cancer because of their weight. And that obese people outnumber smokers two to one“.

THE RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD

I am not a health and fitness blogger. And I am not a finger-pointing moral preacher over people’s inability to exercise self-control. However, the relationship with food is complicated, going from emotional self-soothing to self-reward and comfort and a metabolic one. And so on.

Nobody can deny, though, that obesity is a growing epidemic affecting the modern civilised world. It has turned into a massive multi-billion dollar market both for the various fitness/diet businesses and gurus, for the food producers of cheap sugar-laden processed food and for Big Pharma businesses. More and more pills on the market to aid/produce fat loss, control appetite, control fat and carb absorption, etc. etc. etc…

I am personally concerned on a human level about the struggle and the frustration/self-shaming that this might cause to millions of people. And its effect on their health.

PEAK PERFORMANCE

From a peak performance perspective (achieving business and life goals/dreams), mental and physical well-being is essential for living a full and fulfilling business and life. If I take Tony Robbins’s quote as a starting point, “Emotion comes from motion“, our physical state drives/can drive our emotional one. And our body/relationship with it is the starting point.

From a business perspective, obesity is another factor that employers now need to consider and make adjustments for. Be prepared and support employees.

For sure, this is a growing issue. Whatever the standard approach has been so far, it doesn’t seem to have worked. So why are we flogging the same dead horses when it comes to solutions (e.g. diet and approach)?
