Old v new habits and creating positive reinforcement is a way to embed what you are learning along the way. What is positive reinforcement?
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
Put simply is the introduction of a reward after achieving the desired behaviour.
The desirable stimulus reinforces the desired behaviour, making it more likely that the behaviour reoccurs.
It follows B. F. Skinner’s operant conditioning model based on the assumption that studying a behaviour’s cause and its consequences leads to understanding it and regulating it.
There are four types of reinforcers, so to speak:
- Natural reinforcers, e.g. occur directly as a result of the behaviour (you diet, you lose weight)
- Token reinforcers, e.g. performing certain behaviours exchanged for something of value (reward system)
- Social reinforcers, e.g. when other people expressing approval of a behaviour
- Tangible reinforcers, e.g. physical or tangible rewards.
Your mind (and mine) is like a puppy that needs to be trained. Willpower is a limited resource and, as you are practising, you need all the help you can get. But you need to trick yourself with positive reinforcement along the way. And that helps with winning the battle of old v new habits.
See you tomorrow, let me know how you are doing; I’m here to help x
