Hello again,

how did you get on yesterday with starting new healthy habits as a base for your happy life?

I’m sure you were already practising most of them ( if not all). The key here was (is) to make them into habits/routines so they become automatic things you do without any thinking and/or effort. The more you automate ( yes, even with your brain/yourself) the easier it becomes.

Today I’d like to talk about something even more basic: breathing.

We all know how to do it, for sure. We would be alive otherwise. But did you know that it can be a source of happiness and a powerful de-stressor too?

That’s right.

Deep breathing allows more air to flow into your body and therefore reduces stress and anxiety.

Breathing purposefully (deep and slow) can physically calm your body down if you feel stressed or anxious, thanks to how the nervous system and how functions.

The autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary actions like heart rate and digestion, is split into two parts. One part, the sympathetic nervous system, contains your fight-or-flight reaction. The second part, the parasympathetic nervous system, controls your rest-and-relax response.

Both parts are always active. Regardless, it can help quiet your sympathetic nervous system and therefore reduce feelings of stress or anxiety.

The technique is simple and easy:

  1. Sit comfortably in a place you can relax and not think about people looking at you
  2. Inhale through your nose for a count of three (as a minimum)
  3. Exhale deeply through your mouth for a count of six to eight
  4. Slow it down
  5. Continue to do so for at least three minutes

See you tomorrow  x
